After much deliberation and premature decision making (“Tuscany! No, Buenos Aires! No, Cabo! No, Paris!”), we finally let our frequent flier miles decide for us:

PUERTO RICO!

We’re terribly excited to see those crystalline beaches, hike through a rainforest, explore the cobble stone streets of Old San Juan, and to go snorkeling! Channing’s never snorkeled, or been anywhere tropical. For someone who loves oppressive heat so much, Puerto Rico is the perfect vacation spot! And luckily, her husband-to-be speaks “conversational” Spanish. (Not that he’ll need to.)

Aside from the usual touches that make a wedding special, for me the highlights were seeing my dad do “the lawnmower dance” and watching my niece and the other younger kids scoot around the floor.

The wedding also brought up special memories for me since Jeremy’s mother’s wedding (my aunt Gayle) was the first wedding I ever attended.  My family still tells stories of a miniature 5-year-old Joseph lip synching and playing air-guitar along to “Elvira” by the Oak Ridge Boys.  In fact, the last time I saw my aunt Gayle in Minneapolis when Channing and I were on tour, she gave me a photo from the wedding.  That’s me on the right.

At Jeremy’s wedding, some clever soul managed to get the DJ to dig up “Elvira.”  Sadly, 24 years later I have forgotten most of the words.  But who could forget the “Getty-up! A-um-puppa-umpuppa-mow-mow!”  Best lyrics ever.

Here’s a pleasant excerpt:

Most vivid Presidio Memories: The Presidio was the most scenic and beautiful army base I’d ever been to. The distinctive scent of the Eucalypts trees hung in the humid air and blended with the cool fresh ocean breezes. The fog crept in at night and lingered until late morning. Sandberg’s poem “Fog” seemed as though he wrote it for San Francisco and The Presidio.

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

I fell asleep at night listening to the foghorns on the bay tooting their random melody. When I returned to San Francisco years later, my biggest disappointment was that radar had replaced the horns.

I found this photo taken of the two of us exactly 5 years ago. We were out with a group of friends on my birthday after everyone met up at the Cyber-NY Halloween party. Little did Channing & I know how well things would turn out between us, how long we’d be together, and how much our hairstyles would change.

Here’s a friendly explanation we found:

If you have been invited to a “Black Tie Optional” affair, you are not required to wear a tuxedo. . However, chances are there will be more guests wearing tuxedos than regular suits at the event. If you do opt to wear a suit, be sure to wear a dark suit with a black tie. If your date is wearing an evening gown, then you have wear a tuxedo. Don’t worry, you will not stick out like a sore thumb. It is impossible to be overdressed at these types of events.

For women, it’s even easier:

Your date can only choose a tux or a dark suit, but your black-tie options are limitless. Whether you choose satin or beads, a dress or a long skirt and top, remember that black-tie optional means dressy.

Joseph may be in white tie, but that’s because he’s the groom…and a secret agent.
